Every boat will race at least two times. We will average the race times for each boat. The boat with the resulting fastest average time will be the winner. We will have volunteer timers, but the Race Officials' decisions will be final.
Scouts will blow into the boat sail to race their boats. Scouts should not touch the boat during the race. If a boat gets stuck, only the race volunteers will be allowed to adjust the it during the races. All boats must meet the assigned race rules as listed below. In the event of a disparity or concern, the Race Officials' decision will be final.
We will be presenting these awards for this year’s Raingutter Regatta, so keep these in mind when designing your boat.
Trophies for top three times in Pack
Ribbons for top three in each rank level
Patches for all participants
Smooth Sailer
Best Scout Theme
Best Use of Color
Best Sail
All boats must be made by the Scouts. Parents or other adults may give assistance, but the Scout should do the main work designing and assembling the boat.
You must use all the structural pieces in the offical boat kit provided by the Pack. The boat must look like a sailboat, so you won't be able to re-invent the boat's design.
Boats from previous years' races cannot be used.
You cannot add weights or any other objects to your sailboat.
No sails may be used other than the one supplied in the official kit.
The sail must be mounted on the mast using holes provided in the sail. The sail may be glued to the mast at the two points of contact with holes in the sail.
You cannot glue your sail to any other point of the hull.
The maximum length is 6 3/4" long, and the minimum length should be no less than the length of the hull provided in the kit.
The mast may not be shortened.
Don't use water-based paints.
All boats will be inspected during check-in time on the day of the race to ensure they comply with the rules and specifications.
Please review the following statement with your Scout:
In every competition there are winners and losers. You accept this when you choose to compete. There may be times when you win and feel happy, and times when you lose and feel unhappy. Winning a boat race does not make you a good Scout. A good Scout does not brag or gloat when they win, and they do not act jealous or bitter when they lose. A good Scout must be able to say, “I did my best” and be proud of their effort. After all, this is the “fun” part of Cub Scouts, enjoy it!
